JANET COWRITES -- OR HOPES TO!
Janet Hetherington has been taking part in the COWRITE SCREENWRITING COMPETITION, which launched in 2008 and finished its first round in January 2009. The challenge is for various writers to create a screenplay 10 pages at a time. Here's what Cowrite has to say:
"Cowrite is redefining screenwriting competitions by creating an open source type contest in which the end goal, like that of all individual aspiring writers, is to write a great screenplay and then try to sell it and get it produced.
The Cowrite script will be written collaboratively over the next six months by aspiring writers. Every other week the best 8-12 page script entry selected by the Cowrite judges will be added to the developing story and posted on the Cowrite website until the script is complete. At that point, one of the eleven winning writers will be selected to do a paid rewrite of the script. Once the rewrite is finished, the team at management/production company Benderspink will give it a read and decide how they want to proceed. Where the script will end up and if it will sell is anyone’s guess. But that’s the challenge. And that’s what makes it special. We're all in this together, one big writing team trying to make a script sale and produce a Hollywood blockbuster.
The story will be guided along by notes and general suggestions posted in The Producer's Blog and The Pro's Take. Feel free to adhere to the suggestions or ignore them completely. Truly, the main criteria for the Cowrite judges in deciding which submission wins will be: Does it keep the reader wondering, "what happens next?"
This is the premise: Determined to be a high-level Jason Bourne type operative, an awkward teenager enlists the help of a mysterious, supposed ex-CIA agent in his hometown and finds himself entangled in a dangerous plot that is way over his head. The first 10 pags have been chosen -- not mine. I thought that as the competition continues, I will post my pages here so people can read my take on the story.
Enjoy!--Janet
